40+ Years on the Water
THE CRAFT
fly fishing, done right
Fly fishing is more than a technique, it's a way of reading the water, understanding what fish are feeding on, and presenting a fly so naturally that a trout can't tell the difference. It's the most hands-on, immersive way to fish, and it's what David has spent 40 years perfecting.
Every trip is tailored to you. Beginners get patient, ground-up instruction. Experienced anglers get local knowledge and access to water they'd have a hard time finding on their own. David provides the rods, the flies, and the terminal tackle, all you bring is a fishing license and a willingness to learn. Prefer something different? Explore our other guided fishing trips, including Spin & Conventional and Beginner Lessons.
The technique you'll use depends on the season, the water, and what the fish are doing. Here are the main styles you'll fish with
K's Outfitter.

TECHNIQUES
Ways We Fly Fish
Euro Nymphing
Euro nymphing, sometimes called contact fishing, uses a long, light rod, typically a 2 or 3 weight, 10 feet or longer, to stay in direct contact with your flies as they drift along the bottom. Instead of watching a floating line, you feel and see every subtle take. It's one of the most effective ways to catch trout, especially when fish aren't rising, and it's an incredibly engaging, personal way to fish. A favorite of David's, and a great skill to learn from someone who fishes it daily.
DRY FLY fishing
The classic, old-school form of fly fishing. Dry fly fishing means presenting a fly on the surface that imitates the insects trout are actively feeding on, and watching the fish rise to take it. It shines during a hatch, when bugs are coming off the water and trout are looking up. There's nothing quite like the moment a trout breaks the surface for a fly you cast, which is why so many anglers consider dry fly fishing the most rewarding way to fish.
Streamer Fishing
Streamer fishing is the fly rod's answer to spin fishing. Using a heavier 5 to 7 weight rod, you cast a larger fly that imitates baitfish or other prey, then retrieve it with a stripping motion to trigger a strike. It's an active, cover-the-water style that often draws out the biggest, most aggressive fish in the river. The rod weight depends on the species you're targeting and the size of the water you're fishing.

COMMON QUESTIONS
FLY FISHING FAQS
Do I need my own gear?
No. David provides rods, reels, flies, and all terminal tackle. Just bring a valid fishing license and dress for the weather.
Do I need any experience to book a fly fishing trip?
Not at all. David guides complete beginners and seasoned anglers alike, and tailors every trip to your skill level. If it's your first time, he'll cover the fundamentals from the ground up.
What fish will we target?
It depends on the season and location. In Eastern Pennsylvania, trips focus on wild and stocked trout. In Western New York, the Lake Ontario tributaries offer world-class steelhead and salmon. David will help you choose based on what's running when you book.
What's the difference between euro nymphing, dry fly, and streamer fishing?
Each is a different way to present a fly. Euro nymphing keeps your flies on the bottom in direct contact for subtle takes, dry fly fishing presents flies on the surface during hatches, and streamer fishing uses larger flies retrieved through the water to trigger aggressive strikes. David will match the technique to the conditions and what you want to learn.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. A valid Pennsylvania or New York fishing license is required depending on where you fish, and it's the angler's responsibility to have one before the trip.
When is the best time to go fly fishing?
There's good fishing in every season. Spring and fall are prime for trout in PA, while the NY steelhead and salmon runs peak in fall and into winter. David can recommend the best window based on what you want to catch.

"I had the pleasure of fishing with Dave in Pukaski NY. This was our first time fishing fir steelhead and he put us on fish, even though it was 24 degrees with 38 degree weather. He is very knowledgable of the area and knew the local regulations (I did not know Pulaski had their own!). He was very patient with us newbies. I would be happy to go out with him again"
